How to apply wall border - 2026 Guide

A wall border is a fantastic and easy way to transform any interior and add a touch of personality. Following the correct steps will ensure a smooth installation and a great result, so we have prepared a guide below to guide you through the process of successfully installing self-adhesive borders.

What to prepare

  • Self-adhesive borders
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Cutter
  • Long ruler
  • Smoothing tool
  • Clean cloth

Preparation

Before you embark on your dream interior transformation, you need to prepare the surface.

1. Make sure the surface is smooth, flat and clean

Before you start, choose a suitable wall or other smooth surface such as furniture or a mirror for your border. Smooth, even, dry and clean surfaces are best. Avoid textured walls as they can cause adhesion problems. All surfaces must be free of grease. Unevenness and roughness must be removed or filled in. Plasterboard, absorbent substrates and fresh plaster must first be primed to achieve perfect adhesion. Otherwise, you risk the adhesive drying out prematurely on absorbent substrates and the border not adhering.

Installation

1. Measure and plan the location

Before starting the installation, it is necessary to plan the location. To do this, use the prepared pencil and ruler to mark the installation place. We recommend sticking approx. 90-110 cm from the ground.

2. Wall border control

Before gluing, make sure that the border has no defects or damage.

3. Cut and dry fit

Cut the first fragment 10-20 mm longer than needed to allow for trimming the ends and lay it dry on the planned surface. Make sure the next fragment follows the border pattern.

4. Installing the first fragment

Odlepte 10–20 cm podkladového papíru z jednoho konce. Zarovnejte tento konec s vodorovnou linií a lehce jej připevněte (zatím silně netlačte). Zbytek bordury držte podepřený a odtažený od zdi, abyste zabránili předčasnému přilepení.

5. Application and smoothing

Install in 20-30cm increments, gradually peeling off the backing and smoothing it out from the centre using a plastic tool. Work in a horizontal line; if you stray, gently lift and reposition the border before pressing it firmly in place.

6. Final smoothing

Use a smoothing tool to firmly but gently run it over the entire border, paying special attention to the edges. Wipe with a clean, dry cloth to remove fingerprints and help activate the self-adhesive.

Tips for successful border installation:

Test a small area in an inconspicuous area to check adhesion, especially on low organic content or stain blocking paints, which can be slippery.

Temperature is important: Cold walls reduce adhesion.

Curves/arches: Make micro cuts only on the backing layer (not through the vinyl) so the border fits smoothly.

High humidity rooms: Ensure excellent surface preparation; if near showers, apply a thin layer of clear paintable sealant along the top edge to prevent vapor ingress (optional).

Have fun applying!
